69 covers and 73 originals?

It seems that we are going to have a hard time voting stuff.

EDIT: I am not sure, but are Original Entries #1/#46/#53/#68 using that mapper 228 thingy? (Action 52/Cheetahmen II)

EDIT2: I heard that FDS cannot be used with other expansion chips. Is it true? (Original Entries #24/#31, not sure whether past entries also use FDS with other chips)

I miss the compo every time, always forgot about it or have no time to make something. But anyway, 69 covers and 73 originals - this is simply crazy, and there is surely no need for my entry, there is need for superhuman abilities to vote.

FDS with other expansions is supported by NSF format (there have been plenty of covers using FDS + other expansions simultaneously) but it's not possible in reality, can't be done on hardware. something to do with FDS expansion sound sharing the same memory location as other expansions... correct me if I'm wrong.

voting will be easy anyway. scores are like between 0 and 3 per song. if you just go with your intuition you can vote pretty quickly, it's nowhere near as complicated as it was in the past, with multiple scoring categories. nonetheless it is a lot of songs.

Are we even able to vote right now? If so, I can't find the option to, haha.

Oh, by the way, I entered in original. Don't know if you guys would be able to find which entry is mine, though.

Voting starts on the 5th, midnight JST (4th, 8am PST).

39 more songs than the last compo is a bit much. I think 2a03 and expansion need to be different contests. It makes sense, because the interest in expansion is way more than it used to be, and 2a03 songs can't really compete on a purely technical level.

Anyway, what I do is listen to about 30 sec/1 min of a song and if it holds my interest, I listen to the entire thing and rate it. If it doesn't hold my interest, I stop playback and rate based on initial impression.

I was pretty floored to see King Crimson, Rentals and Deerhoof in the covers...kudos to whomever did those.

No wonder why everyone in the Americas miss FamiCompo (unless they're morning people). :P

Anyways, do you intend to listen to all 142 submissions? I personally don't have the time to.

A tip for folks with limited time on their hands: put all the covers or originals in a Winamp playlist, shuffle them, and listen in descending order. Stop when you've decided you've had enough...that way, you may only be voting on 20 or 30 entries, but they're completely random.

I feel compelled to vote on everything, since I submitted a track (first time ever). 70 tracks down so far.

I listen to tracks while doing other things, like driving or work or something. If a song catches my interest, I'll write down its number, then listen to those again. This year though a lot of songs are on that list..

I agree. However, there are always few simply amazing songs for pure 2A03 at the FamiCompo, both by composition and technique, so they are able to compete with all the extensions really well.

That's actually a good idea; I can encode the songs to MP3 & play them on a music player while doing something else.

It's so true; TSSF's Megaman Medley's a great case when it comes to technique that rivals expanded chiptunes.

just a reminder that the famicompo sync-listen starts at 10:00PM GMT (a little over 5 hours from now) in #mod_shrine on espernet (irc.esper.net)

if you're not familiar with IRC, use mibbit - find EsperNet in the list, pick a name and type #mod_shrine.

hope to see you there!

Well I wasn't able to be on the chat for too long but Mex managed to save me some logs of what happened, major props for that. Hopefully I'll be around to hear the cover songs with all of you later, though!

no worries, you can watch a recording of the sync-listen here if you want: http://www.justin.tv/surasshu/b/269441080

sadly there is quite a large delay between the conversation and the songs though (songs play and reactions come about 10 or more seconds later.)

Mind you, I'd expect that in such a video stream.

So far, I can't decide on who deserves a first-place rank for FamiCompo. They're all great.
