I'm actually going to stick with IRC, to tell you the truth, but I might not be able to attend the "class" due to my work outside of the virtual world. But thanks for letting me know.

what's so bad about skype?

Using it as a VoIP service to make phone calls to normal land & cell lines cost extra &, if long distance is concerned, this defeats the purpose of using an internet system to avoid long distance & normal service costs.

Sure, it's free to make calls between other Skype subscribers; the same can be said for other instant messaging applications. If Doommaster1994 & I both run Yahoo Messenger, we can both communicate with a microphone & camera free of charge, regardless of the fact that he's in the US & I'm in Canada (just like a Skype-to-Skype chat). The only difference; I can't communicate to non-Yahoo users through Yahoo (which I can live with,) while communicating to anyone outside of Skype will cost me as much as a 10-cent-per-minute Fido cell phone from the early 2000's.

That's just my own opinion.

Skype calls to a phone line are only 2.3c/min though, and that's at its most expensive. If you call some place regularly you can get much cheaper rates than that too.

Who said I wanted people to call my phone?
And I have a special Famitracker cover in the works for you guys now. It's a cover of one of the rarest games ever made.

I can think of one upside: Skype lets me voice call Skype users even if all I have on myself is my iPhone (and I'm pretty sure Android devices support it as well). Granted it's only valid if you have said iPhone, but it is something.

Also I thought Skype had pretty advantageous rates for calling phones overseas compared to regular long-distance deals.

Yes; the only upside to it is cross-compatibility.
