I've been trying to figure out what exactly the NSF does when it's playing in games.

Is there some place in memory where both the sound data is stored as well as a timer? Are there any other variables involved? I know that it uses part of zero page and $0200, but can't really figure out much more than that.

I'm just asking cause I got these cool sound effects for my latest game and this is one I'm determined to have music play as well.

Sivak: You can find the source on the download page, and you should be able to figure out some answers from it.

Only a few bytes from zero page and almost whole $200 page is used.
