Apparently the tri channel starts to lose its bass when the freq is that low. I tried pitching it up an octave, and although the notes are higher, they have more bass.
Another solution is to move all the VRC6 instruments to N163 channels and layer the 2A03's tri with a Namco sine (or two). Also, I have to say I would never expect simple volume and PW envelopes to sound that good.
