Awesome new server (loads faster for me than the old Shoodot host, at least).

As for new forum software, I have quite a bit of negative experience with FluxBB, phpBB & PunBB; they're the targets of a high number of Russian spam bots. SMF is a bit better (creating skins for it is easy & it's easier to manage for mods & admins, plus less bots,) but there's still a higher risk of bots due to it being a more mainstream package.

In terms of security & management, I'd honestly recommend SMF if you're going to port the database to any other forum software (& I'm thinking of either switching SMF myself, or using HCS' forum software if my sites support MySQL Improved).

I'm not going to lie... I was genuinely scared when the original site didn't load. Glad to see it has a new home and a new name.

Why not use a free forum software?

You came in a bit too late on this, plus this forum IS free software. Look up Forum Senaculum.

By the way, as to JSR's asking if we're in favor of starting afresh & using the current forum's database as a backup, I'm all for it.

BattleBeard; it helps to read the previous page:

The moderation tools in Senaculum are awful... >.<

How 'bout some sweet phpBB?

I have looked into porting the database to phpBB, but that would require too much work so it probably won't happen. The other option would be to start a new forum and possibly keep the old one as read-only. Would this be acceptable?
This software is not exactly state of the art, but it still does what it's supposed to.

And ForuMotion's a separate forum host. Why bother with that when you have the resources & want more control over them?

It doesn't need saying that using better forum software would be a godlike addition for this place. Like said previously, if the old one was just read only and still accessable I'd be happy enough.

Of course, it would be even better to merge the two together, but if that requires too much work... well, the alternative's still a good idea then.

What can you not do on these current forums, features-wise? Anything important?

The only thing that bothers me about the current forum software is that it knows which posts in a thread are unread, but it won't take me to them. I have to click on the last page, and then figure out if I should click back a page, etc. (and if someone edits a thread in the middle, phooooo).

There's also the ghost page problem, but if moderators would refrain from deleting posts we wouldn't have it... (maybe just edit them blank instead?)

Other than that I think it works great.

I'm all for getting new forum software, even if it means starting afresh. I'll echo rainwarrior's complaints about the lack of "jump to first unread post" link, and ghost pages. I've also had occasions where I would have unread posts in the "Talk" forum, check out the "Show Off" forum, then go back to the forum root and see that I have no unread posts any more, without having cleared them myself.

The unread posts will re-appear after a refresh usually.

I'm definitely for new forum software. I don't care what software you use if you upgrade to new software unless you get one where you can only attach ZIPs or pics.

Phpbb is great... I like the idea of getting new forum software, and keeping this old as read only.
