the 15 kHz tone is a watermark
in order to get rid of it you must purchase the registered version of famitracker which also includes tons of extra features

I wholeheartedly agree with jrlepage. As much as FT is a tool aimed at the Famicom, therefore subject to its limitations, it is a tool for composition. And whatever hinders this purpose is counter-productive to have around.

And the hiss DOES hinder the purpose, and it IS counter-productive to have around.

And yes, I can hear it, I can hear it when there are 7 channels, it's a really awful sound; and yes, I would love to have an option to turn it off.

I would also love this option NOT TO BE OBSCURE. It'd be really nice to have it toggled off by default for all the people who side with accuracy, but make it easy to toggle on. A single checkbox at the side of the channel amount slider would suffice, IMO.

This goes for rainwarrior too: I do agree that emulation accuracy is important, but I do hope that you don't change your mind about how good an idea it is to make it optional, especially in NSFPlay.

And Kulor: Having the 8 channels available is not just useful for polyphony, but for more complex methods of instrumentation. Anything that can be done on 4 channels, can be done in 8 with echo, to say an example.

The hiss sometimes gets really annoying and I hear it on all channel combinations from 2 to 8.
There should be an option to turn the accurate emulation off, and switch to the inaccurate one (I have nothing against the accurate emulation, it just sometimes hurts my ears with the hiss.)

Actually, yeah, testing out FT, where there is less than 8 channels there is still a ring for each channel setting; I think this may be unintended aliasing of the frequencies that should be inaudible? Try the attached FTM with different numbers of channels.

and i really have something against accurate

i mean, the waves sound better, but if it's going to rape my poor ears, ESPECIALLY on 8 channels, then i'd really like to have on/off option. till the day, i'm going to use BETA 3.

Actually this doesn't sound like "hiss" to me at all. It sounds like some weird additive modulation. And it is bad: in my opinion only 1 or 2 channels are truly usable. But does this affect the actual nsf output? VirtuaNSF sounds better, but not by a huge margin.

edit: I guess rainwarrior beat me to it.

It doesn't affect NSF exporting, since it has to do with the way the player emulates the actual chip. Try throwing an 8-channel N163 NSF at NEZPlug++, though...

And if you made an N163 NSF using ppMCK and used 8 channels, and then played it on a real Famicom after modding it for AV out, you'd hear the whine.

if you want 8 channels with echo, there's always the super nintendo. Hey you don't even need to sacrifice any channels to do echo with the SNES! And in fact you can play actual samples through it without hiss or anything. The N163 is not exactly unique, there are a million things out there that sound exactly like it and do a much better job.

I mean once again, we're talking about what's ideal vs. what's realistic...and as it turns out, the reality is that the N163 is just kinda crappy when you use all 8 channels. As far as I'm aware, there was never going to be an option to add support for multiple soundchips because the hardware could never do that, even though ideally that would be awesome and people have been doing it for years in MML anyway. If we're gonna pretend like the N163 doesn't sound horrible, why not also pretend like the NES could have all the expansions running simultaneously?
I just think that Famitracker should either stick to being as accurate as it possibly can be, or should accept having a multitude of features that make it inaccurate. If we add an option to get rid of the N163 hiss, then I also want an option to choose between the more accurate VRC7 poop-patches or the less accurate VRC7 awesome-patches.

I totally agree. If it's what makes it sound more realistic, then go for it. Especially if you've got a Powerpak (I don't but I know jrlepage does.)

What does the Power Pak even have to do with this

I think a lot of people have power paks other than jrlepage lmao

But anyway, I agree with the whole on/off toggle button for accurate/inaccurate emulation. Even a little disclaimer or something can pop up when yo toggle it to inaccurate. I don't see in any way how a toggle for these two things will hurt anyone...

I think you're missing my point. I just want consistency. If N163 is going to have an option to disable hiss, then VRC7 should have an option to use old patches. If VRC7 won't have an option to use old patches because it's not accurate, then N163 shouldn't have an option to disable hiss because it's not accurate.

but the old VRC7 patches don't hinder the creative process

and a deafening hiss does

I also agree with leaving the hiss in.
If you want to make good-sounding, multi-waveform music then use this; It's much better suited for the purpose.
If famitracker is created with the intention of providing people with an accurate means of creating NES/Famicom (and all its respective expansions) music, then it should always be as accurate as possible without any inconsistencies.
Besides, if you wanted to play your music on a real unmodded Famicom the high-pitched sound would be inaudible anyways.
