Since DPCM has a very limited volume and it's usually overpowered by other expansions, I would recommend that you limit the volume of your compositions. For example, for all the N163 channels you could assign a maximum volume of 0xA or whatever you feel pleased with. I have done a little of this lately and it works pretty good. The main idea is to make everything hearable because it happens very often that DPCM doesn't stand out from the rest of the channels because they are too loud.
Yeah, usually I would say add noise+DPCM drums but... well, lower the volume, as noise+DPCM doesn't help timpani one bit.

That's fine, it's your song. Still, you might want to consider that advice in your future works, mostly for sound quality, but sometimes loud compositions are actually very enjoyable.
As a side note, I extracted the samples from that song a few months ago and those timpani really suck if you convert them to DPCM, but I don't think there's something that can equal the sound of them and has better quality at the same time.
Whoa, I heard N163 is able to do 256 wave samples per wave instead of 32 wave samples! Kind of reminds me of FDS expansion, except more freedom to set the samples.
It's explained in the article, just before where you saw this piece of information.
The article wrote:
FamiTracker allows waveforms between 4 and 32 samples long (in increments of four), though recent discoveries have shown the actual chip is capable of reading the entire channel/waveform memory space, for a total of 256 samples per wave.
The discovery was made after Famitracker 0.4.0 was released. jsr hasn't gone back to modify the N163 code to include 256-sample waves yet.
Does this mean in any way that waves containing 256 samples can only be used if one channel is enabled, or you can use them even if all channels are enabled? That confuses me.
Mr. Masterofallthe...master: I think you can use them even if all channels are enabled. I think if you use the channel of something like 32 wave in with 256 wave instrument, it'll be the same as what I was having problems in the first place about similar sound; sound over-lap...or what jrlepage explained here before about " one in position 1 will "rewrite" the other wave, except for the first sample of the first wave." http://famitracker.com/forum/posts.php?page=1&id=4378&sort=
I AM A TRACK MAN!!!!: What do you mean MMC5 is humble?
Yeah so...are 256 sample waves possible with 8 channels enabled, or would the channel registers take too much of the RAM area? Another question is how such a lengthy wave would affect the pitch (other than making it really low).
Final Lap and Rolling Thunder use four channels, and use 256-sample waves. I think if you use five or more channels, channel data begins to overlap with wave memory so you become more and more limited in terms of how many samples you can assign to each wave.
