Pardont the pedantry, but the FDS is a video game console add-on. The "soundchip" you are referring to is the 2C33.

With that being said, the N163 is without a doubt a better option for making Gameboy-esque tracks if you're going for something that will emulate the hardware better. Just be slightly wary though: using a single channel will cause the N163 volume to go through the roof (on hardware and in software that properly emulates it), which means the 2A03 is barely audible. Do be certain to never use volume values above 4 (the original Gameboy wave channel can only output 100%, 50%, 25% or 0% anyway, so 4-2-1-0 are perfectly viable values).

Although, if we're honest with ourselves, the best way to make Gameboy music is to make actual Gameboy music... (Using software like Deflemask, XPMCK, LSDJ, etc.)

Pardon the pedantry, but you spelled "pardon" wrong. =P

Haha, just kidding! I do agree on the point that Game Boy trackers would be the best way. I really don't know why 2C33 sounds better. Filtering? Pitch values? I don't know enough to answer this.

I did this between classes today. It's super short, but I really like it. Hopefully I actually do something with it someday.

It's the N163, not n106.

It's the N163, not n106.

In fairness, it was known as the N106 for many many years, since the only people who ever referred to it were Japanese people who used it in their MMLs, and we westerners assumed they knew that they were talking about. It turns out they did not, though: when the chip finally received support in Famitracker, thus giving it exposure among western chip musicians, someone from either this forum or the NESDev forums noticed that no Famicom cart ever contained a chip called the "NAMCOT 106". Further research revealed that Namco games that did feature expansion audio sported a "NAMCOT 163" instead. This only happened less than two years ago though (NSFs have existed since 2002, if memory serves), so some confusion still occasionally occurs.

That discovery was made round about the same time as the one about the N163's mixing method, but that was a slightly less happy finding as far as I'm concerned...
