There is a standard NSF player. It's called the NES. (Actually, not really. Specifically doing nonstandard framerates is something you have to build into the cartridge hardware. Also every NES is slightly different.)
There is no "intended NSF player" field.
My advice is just to get over it and either try to write music that's robust across many players, or stop caring and let the listeners sort it out and tell each other how to listen to your shit.
Yeah you're right. I think what I remembered was submitters posting the intended player in their song comments (mostly for Famicompo #2, back when accurate players were basically nonexistent).
They're allowed. Except many people still use VirtuaNSF like a ding dong wow (which doesn't support it thanks a lot VirtuaNSF and its fanbase), so you're better off not overclocking anything.

I plan to listen to every entry that I can on my Famicom (that means multi-expansion, FDS and overclocked NSFs will have to make do with NSFPlay).
I'd be amazed if you listened to every N163 tune with more than 6 channels on your famicom without any filtering taking place. :P

This is an interesting conundrum because often in emulated formats, something is never listened to as intended by the author. It's neat when something is found more interesting in from a speed or note glitch or whatever. I know the intent doesn't matter that much but... It bugs me when stereo recordings of the submissions go out as the subs I entered were never put together with that in mind at all. It _could_ work, but it usually ends up being done in an automated batch and sounds far worse because suddenly half the bass is off to the left and half is in center and suddenly two more people are now dictating the chipmusic style guide and just ugh.

Since the NES/Famicom is my primary "instrument", I consider it to be my "vinyl record" so as to have the best possible sound quality, so I've always intended for people to listen to my shit on hardware, and as such, I write mine with MY NES in mind:
Bright pulses
Bass filled Triangle
Clean(er than famitracker) DPCM samples, i.e. If my samples are "clean" (clear but still shitty) in FT, they'll be slightly cleaner on actual hardware
Sharp noise
And I'm not just describing the channels that way because I'm biased and think my particular NES's audio is the best out of all of them (), although there is a slight difference between all three (NES, NES, and Famicom).
Wha- NES, NES, and Famicom??? WHAT THE- (explosion)
