The reason why I write chiptunes using Famitracker is because I like the bitty music (Reminds me of my old Pokemon and LoZ days) and I like working with a certain set of instruments because otherwise I'd just wander off trying to find what the different kinds of guitars do. I also like it because it's free!
New guy as well, btw }
Usually the thing that motivates me is knowing that people will get to listen to it in the end one way or another. This is why joining game projects for free is what gets me to improve myself the most, because I have a reason to improve in the first place!
Since this is up here again, I might as well tell you guys about it.
I have a weird sense of motivation, I make music because I feel I have to and I also enjoy it (though I rarely listen to music), but there's actually nothing that keeps me doing this. However, it's really cool when I share the stuff I made in the tracker and let people hear it and enjoy it, which is actually very rewarding for me.
I have always liked the sound of the pulse waves, all back from my childhood, when I owned one of those dreaded Famiclones, until now. Also, I enjoy game music in a way that it makes me really happy because it resembles those good times when you could play those fun games in a console in front of your TV, and also because I enjoy playing games from older consoles like the Genesis or the SNES, including NES of course.
I studied music for 5 years and during that time, I always wanted to start making my own music, even if it was just random crap. I don't like playing instruments that much because sooner or later I quit, but I always learn something in the end. Since I was 9 I have been playing instruments, enjoying their sounds and always wanting to learn more but once I knew about the existence of FamiTracker (March 2012 if I remember correctly), everything changed because I saw in it the chance to be able to finally start writing music.
Covers are what I like to do the most, it serves as ear training and also as a great way to let some bad feelings go out. In fact, when I'm actually in a bad mood or something happens to me, I start writing stuff in the tracker because this is what makes me happy and it makes me quickly forget about my troubles.
I like FamiTracker and making music in it, even if it's just covers, and I also enjoy a lot when people post stuff here, I like to analyze their music, learn a couple things maybe or just listen to something for a while.
As a summary, I wouldn't really call it a motivation. I just make music when I feel I must do so. Might be hard to understand, but this is how many things work for me.

Famitracker is a relatively easy way to experiment with unorthodox rhythm/tonality and I happen to like the sounds of the NES. I've made plenty of "real" music and it's alot more work in regard to performing and audio engineering.
Also, if you're coming from a rock music background, it alters your perspective on composition. You learn to focus more on things like countermelody and minimalism (in regard to what instrument does what). It is sort of a training ground for real world orchestration.
Why do you work with what's essentially a novelty and only popular as such.
Novelty is in the eye of the beholder.
To the rest of your question. Because I have to, as has been stated earlier.
I like the stimulation that music gives me, and my own music stimulates me in a way that I enjoy, so I make it. I also hope that some of it can be enjoyed by others and maybe challenge their perspective on music.
I make music because it's so fun and I can express myself with it, and I'm always told by people that I should be selling my music, but I don't think I'm that good yet...

Why do I do music? Because I can, and because I want to. (although I'm not much of a musician. My brother is a far better musician then I am. Too bad he doesn't know how to use a tracker )
I kinda prefer 8-bit music to other forms of music. (Fact: Prior to discovering FamiTracker, I used to attempt to do 8-bit music in MilkyTracker.)
