I don't. I just recognize my block, and wait for a day when I feel especially musical, then I try again. Sometimes I can be waiting a few months, sometimes a few hours.
1. Work on it every day no matter what, at least a little. (I try to do at least 30 minutes a day.)
2. When I need a guide, I use a model. For music, take a piece of music you like and write your new tune doing what it does. Not a cover, just taking ideas from it- form, structure, bits of orchestration- until you've got enough for it to stand on its own.
3. Listen to music that is the polar opposite of what you're doing. Sometimes I find unusual ideas this way, and when I don't it's a good way to clear out my mind, which is also helpful.
i listen to music in an attempt to reverese-engineer it. listening to what i can recycle into another song. i find out alot but most of the time forget it too :/ i dont take notes.
but once, i had a click which i later turned into 3 songs.... from an idea only 4 notes long.
I don't know, really; I would love to know some things, because I've had a pretty good block for, oh... when was that last soundcloud post... 2 months now? xD
