All the real-world instruments has very complex waveforms, however they could be represented as huge number of sine waves. I think, approximation you've got is not (completely) correct - brass nothing like sine, and flute nothing like saw. Vise versa sounds more close to true.

Anyway, these waveforms aren't available on plain 2A03, and if you going to use extensions, VRC7 will give better approximation of the real instruments.

Not only that, but we all have to remember that we're using devices (2A03, VRC6/7, FDS, MMC5) that produce digital waveforms. The only device that's closest to producing analog sound is VRC7 & even that's PWM.

On the original topic, I have a couple decent strings instruments right here for you:

Thanks for that, man. The only problem is that I don't have FamiTracker 0.3.5 running due to system instability (it keeps locking up on me). However, I did have a look at FamiTracker 0.3.5 (only for a short time) & noticed that the strings instrument was nothing more than a small blip in the VRC6 channels. On top of it, your slow-attack strings instrument doesn't really suit the way a violin actually sounds in terms of volume (an actual violin can do slower attack speeds than this). But it's a great set so far.

No matter what I do, I apparently cannot get that instrument to export properly! It seems you ended up getting the volume envelope for my 2A03 drums instead of what it should be.

Because you're exporting your drum instrument. :P

No worries; this happens. Try again.

But the drums are 2A03 and the exported file is VRC6. Something's gone wrong.

Look at your instrument's numbers; make sure they match those of the notes you're playing the effect on.

Better yet, why not post the FTM?

All my ftms are in the zip file linked to in my signature. The strings instrument is in several; one is the Creation remix.

I reckon you can get some pretty accurate violin sounds out of the sawtooth channel. That's the waveform most closely associated with a violin sound as doommaster said. So yeah, sawtooth, around about octave 3 - 5, relatively slow attack and vibrato applied at the end of notes. That should sound fairly close.

Yes; that explains why I had some success with one of my tunes (I transcribed a Swedish folk song & used the sawtooth channel to simulate the buzz of a hurdy gurdy's bridge & crank).

So maybe using the sawtooth with a slow attack & light pitch bend would work.

I find that when using strings, VRC7 is your best bet. Using patch 0, you can even adjust the attack time with a slider.

There's one problem, though; I can't use FamiTracker 0.3.5 because it's unstable on my computer. I can only do it for one or two things, but I heavily rely on Famitracker 0.3.0 for my needs.

But that's still a good idea (since VRC7 can achieve complex waveforms that other chips can't).
