nicetas_c said sound chips. I don't think it's possible to expand upon what the CPU and SPC700 already provide (though you can do pretty advanced stuff like streaming audio if you know how).
N106 is like 8 FDS channels without the FM stuff and shorter wavetables.
That, and depending on how many channels you want to use (8 or 4 or 2), the lower the number of wave-table channels the longer the wave-tables in channel. This is purely from my understanding, though, so I could be wrong.

Something makes me think that there was a sound chip or two available....
I think there might have been, but I think that may have been for some streaming audio and not necessarily for music. See Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius (am I spelling the romanji right?) for said example.
I know for definite there was a 3D chip. See Starfox and Vortex.
So yes, there were add-on chips for the SNES, but not necessarily for music from my understanding. I would think that the sample-based system of music would have been sufficient enough, personally.
Although it isn't backward compatible with the 2A03, it can simulate it by using samples. See Donkey Kong Country's intro music. I think it did an ok job of simulating it, but not perfect, as the SNES has something like an anti-aliasing filter.
BTW, sorry to get off topic there... ^_^'

There were sound chips, just not used for music, even though compatible. One, I beleive, was like a minichip version of the 2a03 internal chip in the NES.
Old thread is old, but I wanted to ask anyway and there's no reason to open a new thread for that purpose...
So how's the N106 coming along? I know there's more important stuff to be done yet in terms of bug-fixing, but y'know, just asking.
Also, this is a bit unrelated, and it might be early to ask, but what about the Sunsoft FME-7? That would be the only remaining chip after the N106 is done, and I'm curious because no one has mentioned it so far.
Does anyone think next release (as in 3.7 and not 3.6) for N106? Though I DO wonder if jsr has thought of including N106 in 3.6 final anyway... or maybe he might save the N106 for last (seeing as it is the cooler of the two chips yet to be implemented)...
Though, what if he adds both? Who knows except jsr at this point.
Anyway, these are just my random ponderings of what might be the next release... Looking forward to seeing this finally completed and ironed out! It is great to be part of this, even if it is just to watch it grow and mature into the coolest Famicom chip tracker out there. It's history in the making! ^_______^

well, if he follows pattern he would put both. after all, he added vrc6/mmc5 in the same one and fds/vrc7 in the next did he not? So it might be both. but due to bugs and anticipation, he may release one before the other.

Hi, N106 will not be included in 0.3.6. The emulation is done and added to the tracker, basically what's left is to add instruments and add it to the NSF exporter (this takes time).
Sunsoft FME-7 will follow but is not finished at all.

It is good that we might see something along the N106 lines soon enough. Things are going to get really cool soon...
