Have you tried using the Zxx effect? It has the effect of clipping DPCM, noise & triangle waves (giving the illusion of decreased volume).

Use a Z7F in the DPCM channel, right when you play your sample. If you're not happy with it, you can always decrease the value of the Fxx effect.
