Then keep practicing! I don't suck at it (although I wouldn't rate myself one of the top NES composers :P), but I've had years of tracker usage behind me as well as a bit of previous experience using mck. It certainly shouldn't take years to master FamiTracker, though.
The only tip I can really give is see what others do and, if you like what they do, do what they do. Also, one thing I like to do is make cover versions of songs -- whether video game music or pop songs -- that I like. My first track in FamiTracker is in fact going to be such a cover version, and I think it's sounding pretty good for what it is.
Famitracker was the first music program i actually sat down and really learnt. I have been using it on and off for two years now and i would just like to say that it's an absolutely wonderful tracker. Big thanks for the many hour's of fun ive had recreating the sounds from my favourite console! ^^
