First off, gotta say FamiTracker is neato, love it.

However, my main question is regarding the ability to export music from FamiTracker and play it on an actual NES console. I've poked around the site and the wiki a bit and ran into a few pieces of info regarding this:

"One of the features is NSF-file exporting. That allows music created in this tracker to be played on the real hardware, or even for for use in your own NES-applications."

"PRG - Creates a single 32 KB program file, ready to be used with a NROM-compatible cart for playback on NES hardware."

Does anyone here know what to do with these files in order to play the music on the console? I'm guessing that I would need some kind of cartridge... but how to get the data onto the cart?

My aim is to bring an NES on stage and have it play back music to accompany live instruments (although, listening to my music it might be the live instruments that are accompanying the NES). I think the authenticity (and not to mention kitsch value) would be increased exponentially if the sound was actually coming out of the NES instead of some kind of laptop.

Even if you fine people yourselves do not know of a step-by-step method of bringing this about, I'd be happy with a direction to look in, another community to ask, etc.

Thanks!

Here's a start... though it may not be the best of starts.

Hey TSSF, your Megaman instrument pack made FT So much more fun to mess around with, so thanks so much. Using them, I made about 10 or so Megaman covers, and I uploaded the better ones in a thread of mine under the "show off your work" section. If you like, check them out for me and let me know what you think.

er, sorry for posting this on an existing thread. I am not a champion forum-user, it appears.

Cool stuff!

I figured I'd give one of these as-accurate-as-possible recreations a go, and here's what I came up with:
Mega Man 3 - Wily Part 2 (ftm + nsf + fti files)

I made it from scratch, and after reading your text file it's funny seeing how we met the same end goal by two different means. I had no idea about the ZNES 2A03 emulator, so I'll have to check it out...

I used nsfplay, opened up the piano view, slowed everything down as much as possible, and observed all the guts as it played. While I could see what all the volumes were, there was no frame of reference for how quickly they were changing in relation to 60 frames per second. So I first ballparked it, knowing the dynamics of the attacks and sustained notes, but not exactly the rate and timing of decay.

Then I sampled the original parts at the slowest speed in nsfplay with audacity, and sampled mine, and was able to tell by looking how I was supposed to alter my envelopes to get everything nailed. They *should* all be completely accurate, but now I'm curious how they'd stack up in comparison with this ZNES thing...

There was a slight issue of tempo. Mine is slightly slower than the original, but the difference is so small that it takes almost 2 minutes for it to get an 1/8th note behind in time. I figured that this would be close enough, at the nicely set global speed of 3 (no FXX command). Even if I could get the tempo closer with an F command, I think it would only be detrimental to my recreation for reasons I discuss in this thread.

danooct1: I'm glad you're enjoying it! I made it to allow people to make Mega Man music a lot easier. It's really fun to hear other's takes on it, or other people make covers utilizing techniques that I outlined. Again, Im glad you're having fun.

bucky: Cool man! I didn't think I was the only one doing this, but I rarely see people going to such great lengths to do the same thing I was doing. It's refreshing knowing I'm not the only one out there who studied the way the sound all worked and utilized what I learned to make remakes and such. Hehe. Keep it up..and have fun, that's what this is all about, right?
